Temodar: What worked for me while taking it
At first, I was so nervous to start the Temodar. I went deep into forums all over the internet and found all kinds of stories from “I didn’t feel a thing!” to “It was the worst thing ever.” I know everyone is different and their bodies handle medications differently but that didn’t really ease my mind cause I had zero idea what to expect.
Its all about body weight and dosage
As a 5’9” 130lb female the first dose of 140mg Temodar didn’t really effect me much. I only felt mildly tired the next day and occasionally nauseous but the Zofran would clear that right up. Honestly, it was just like drinking one too many glasses of wine the night before. I only had to take Zofran during the day about 3 or 4 times. I found taking Zofran about 2 hours after I ate dinner and waiting 30min to an hour to take the Temo right before bed really helped. My doctors told me that I only needed to wait an hour after I ate but I noticed the longer I waited, the less nauseous I would feel. I usually waited as long as I could, got ready for bed (minus brushing my teeth), then took the Temo on an empty stomach with lots of water. After I took the Temo, I would brush my teeth then go to bed. I noticed this reduced my anxiety and got the weird taste out of my mouth. Also I feel like standing upright for a short period after I took the Temo helped my stomach settle a little bit? It could just be in my head but do whatever works for you! The taste and smell of the Temo pill was very cabbage/broccoli like? Obviously I didn’t chew it but it had a weird essence on the outside.
They upped my dosage after radiation to 265mg and I did feel it a little more. I was more fatigued and icky feeling but I was home then so I just had lazy days with my cat and did mellow things with my friends like movie nights. I found the more water I drank the better I felt so I started drinking a lot more water. But, I did have to wake up several times throughout the night to go to the bathroom. I thought I would feel pretty bad when I got up but I didn’t which was great.
The doctors upped my dose again to 345mg and I felt it more, but not by a whole lot, just more icky and fatigued. Then, the second time taking 345mg I was in hell. I couldn’t get out of bed. They backed off the dosage to 255mg since.
My Temodar Schedule:
1. Eat dinner around 7pm with lots of water and wait 2 hours until taking Zofran
2. Take Zofran and wait until you go to bed (at least 30 min- 1 hour)
3. Right before bed take the Temodar with a BIG glass of water
4. Do one task (Like brushing your teeth)
5. Bed!
I found I was very turned off by certain smells and foods. Meat, fried foods, and things with a lot of sugar were an absolute no. I usually ate things that did not have a lot of seasoning or sauce and that was fine. I just didn’t really crave anything and nothing sounded good but I forced myself to eat small meals multiple times a day to keep my energy up. Im sure everyone is different with this but that was just my experience.
Tips while taking Temodar:
Drink LOTS of water throughout the day! Like, an insane amount of water. Not all at once, but throughout the day. Yes, you’re going to pee a lot.
Take whatever will make you go #2. Seriously. It will make you feel 1000x better and you want that sh*t out of your system right?
Eat whatever works for you and your body. Weather its large or small meals, just keep your energy up.
